Nordic journalist unions: Drop the charches against Hong Kong journalist association’s chairman
The presidents of the five Nordic journalist unions ask Hong Kong authorities to immediately drop all charges against their colleague Ronson Chan, chairperson of the Hong Kong Journalists Association. Hong Kong police arrested Chan, a reporter for the online news outlet Channel C HK, when he was on an assignment on Wednesday September 7. He is now released on bail but is obliged to report to the police later this month and risks to be sentenced to jail.
Our international organization, the International Federation of Journalists, has monitored the situation in Hong Kong with increasing concern and reports that the nation’s media and civil institutions have come increasingly under attack since the establishment of the National Security Law (NSL) in 2020.
The authorities should also cease the harassment and the intimidation of journalists in Hong Kong and ensure that journalists’ organisations can work freely.
