Our mission is to protect journalists' rights, strengthen the profession and defend the values that independent journalism depends on. We work to promote fair working conditions, independent journalism, press freedom, freedom of expression, public access to information, media diversity, copyright and high professional and ethical standards.
Membership is open to journalists and other professionals involved in creating, editing and adapting journalistic content across all media platforms, whether employed or freelance. We also welcome students, retired members and journalists who have recently moved to Sweden through dedicated membership categories.
By joining the union, members commit to upholding our statutes and Code of Professional Ethics. In return, they gain access to professional advice, legal assistance and the support of a strong professional community.
We negotiate collective agreements, provide legal advice and represent members in employment-related matters. We also work to strengthen copyright protection and improve conditions for freelance journalists.
Members receive a digital membership card and digital press card through the union. We also issue the International Press Card (IPC), recognised by journalists' organisations around the world. Our press cards confirm the holder's membership of the union and their commitment to the ethical standards of Swedish journalism.
International cooperation is an important part of our work. Through the Nordic Federation of Journalists (NJF), the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), we work with colleagues across the Nordic region, Europe and the rest of the world to defend journalists' rights, strengthen press freedom and support independent journalism.
The Congress is our highest decision-making body and meets every three years. It elects the Executive Committee, which leads the union between congresses.
